"Ode to an Infant Daughter"
I thought a rose the fairest thing
That I could ever see
Until I saw this little girl
That God had given me
Of music's finest part I thought
That I had heard the whole
Until my daughter's little cry
Brought music to my soul.
My arms I thought had borne their share
Of life's most perfect part
Until I held this tiny form
Against my joy-filled heart
I thought the greatest joy was mine
That any one could know
But then I only held the cup
Which now doth overflow
That I could ever see
Until I saw this little girl
That God had given me
Of music's finest part I thought
That I had heard the whole
Until my daughter's little cry
Brought music to my soul.
My arms I thought had borne their share
Of life's most perfect part
Until I held this tiny form
Against my joy-filled heart
I thought the greatest joy was mine
That any one could know
But then I only held the cup
Which now doth overflow
